National Waste Reduction Week (WRW) takes place from October 16th through to October 22nd. WRW is a week where we concentrate primarily on the importance of reducing waste, improving the efficiency of resources and introducing how important it is to become a circular economy.
This program is a celebratory week to recognize our environmental achievements while inspiring and motivating new and exciting initiatives to protect our environment. It is also a time to navigate solutions to current environmental affairs. It encourages a wide range of audiences to be involved (companies, schools, organizations, individuals and much more).
The main objective for this week in October is to mobilize actions throughout Canada and promote the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and then Recycle! The purpose behind Waste Reduction Week is to empower Canadians to be more aware when it comes to disposing their waste and to make a conscious decision. It offers informative facts and initiatives to help reduce waste on a day-to-day basis, working together to come up with solutions to ongoing environmental problems like waste disposal, water and air pollution and Climate change.
The history behind Waste Reduction Week – The initiative sprung to mind during the mid-1980s, when a number of environmental organizations and recycling councils decided to host provincial events. In 2001, not long after this did they officially claim a week of the year that would be dedicated to reducing waste, naming it National Waste Reduction Week. This environmental week had been formalized by the Recycling Council of Ontario(RCO) who currently controls the national campaign.
Since then this environmental week has become extremely popular and many environmental organizations, corporations, schools, and individuals are contributing more and more each year. Let’s keep creating awareness and push new and exciting initiatives that will build a healthier and happier place to live.

About ERA:
The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 to address the growing problem of e-waste and the increasing ‘digital divide’. For over ten years, ERA has offered simple solutions to help individuals and organizations prevent operational equipment from premature destruction. With a focus on recovery, refurbishment, and reuse, ERA continuously supplies charitable groups with donated IT equipment while securely managing the retiring IT assets of organizations and individuals across Canada. We believe that reuse before recycling is critical in managing the waste created by computer hardware, and by offering industry-leading data destruction for all equipment we receive, we have securely repurposed hundreds of tons of equipment. Because not everything ERA receives can be reasonably repurposed, we have partnered with certified recycling organizations to process equipment that has reached the end of its productive life.
The ERA is focused on reducing unnecessary waste and/or environmental impact through effective management of retiring electronic and IT equipment. As a non-profit organization with deep community roots, it is our “reuse” focus and donation activities which set us apart from others in this sector. This is why we feel Waste Reduction Week is an important week when creating environmental awareness.
